FAQ for Gym Users

Q. What is gymdar?

A. Gymdar.uk is a handy resource to help you find a gym. As an independent site we aim to list every public gym in the UK - not just the big chains. Included in our results are national gym chains, independent gyms, leisure centre gyms and dual use gyms. An exciting feature of gymdar.co.uk is the ability for users to write reviews about their favourite (or most hated) gym.

Q. How do I find a gym?

A. Searching for a gym is easy. Just enter your post code in the search box found at the top of any page, select how far you're willing to travel and then hit search! Your results are shown on a map and as a list, and you can sort the results by distance, user rating or name. If you're looking for a gym with a particular feature, you can filter your results by specific facility such as "Swimming Pool", "Creche" or "Climbing Wall". Just click "more search options"  and the advanced search box will appear.

Q. Do I have to search by post code?

A. No, although we highly recommend it. Using your post code gives more accurate distance data, plus saves confusion over exactly where you want to search. For example, there is a town called Bangor in both Wales and Northern Ireland so the results you get might not be what you were looking for. If you really want to use an address other than your post code, we suggest being as specific as possible. So instead of "Bangor" enter "Bangor, Wales" or "Bangor, Northern Ireland".

Q. Can I filter the results? What search options do I have?

A. If you click "more search options" you'll notice that the search box expands ro reveal a whole host of extra search options.

Q. Can I search for xxx? Why can't I search for xxx?

A. The advanced search feature of gymdar.co.uk allows you to filter your results so that you can quickly find exactly what you are looking for. To keep things simple we have limited the search options to the most common features such as swimming pools, sports halls and saunas. If you don't see the option you want to search by, it could be that we are calling it something else. For example a "Health Suite" is a common term for Sauna or Steam Room facilities, and a "Sports Hall" can be used for a variety of sports including badminton basketball and indoor football.

Q. Where do you get your data?

A. All of our data on the gyms, including the data we use for the facility search, comes from publicised information. Usually this is the gyms website, price lists, leaflets or brochure. If a gym has additional features which are not publicised we will most likely not be aware of them. This is why we do not have search option for "Personal Trainers" as gyms often do not mention it in their literature. Eventually we intend to make contact with every gym in our database to what features they have, but until then please be aware that gyms may have features in addition to the ones we list.

Q. Why dont you list xxx gym?

A. Ah dang it, we missed one! We aim to list every gym in the UK so if you're aware of a gym that isn't featured on gymdar.co.uk then please let us know. We should also point out that we only list gyms which are open to the public (either via membership or one off visits). We do not list gyms which restrict membership, such as a gym in an apartment complex that can only be used by residents, or a university gym that can only be used by students of that university.

Q. What is a "Dual Use" gym?

A. You may notice that we sometimes refer to a gym as a "Dual Use Facility" - this is a gym that is shared between a school or college and the community. Dual use facilities often (but not always) have restricted opening times, and may be closed during school hours. The quality of the facilities will vary dramatically between gyms, ranging from so-so to state of the art, but they usually offer excellent value for money.

FAQ for Gym Owners / Managers

Q. Who added my gym?

A. We did! At gymdar.co.uk we actively look for gyms, and list every gym that meets our one criteria - they must be open to the public.  This includes membership only gyms, but you must accept registration from the general population. The only exceptions to this rule are ladies only gyms - we do list these, despite the fact that they exclude 50% of the population.

Q. What should I do if my gym isn't listed?

A. If we happen to have missed your gym during our initial data run, please let us know. Provided it meets the contitions in the question about, we'll add it as soon as possible.

Q. Do you charge for listings on gymdar.co.uk?

A. No. Our aim is to list every public gym in the UK free of charge.

Q. Can I pay to get better exposure?

A. Currently, no. This is something that we are looking into and you can register your interest by contacting us.

Q. Can I edit my gyms listing?

A. Yes and no. If there is an error on the listing please contact us to let us know.

Q. My gym has received a bad review, can you change it?

A. Absolutely not. The reviews that your users leave are their personal opinions. If you do get negative reviews we suggest encouraging your happy users to come onto the site and write their own reviews.

Q. How can I make the most of gymdar.co.uk

A. Gymdar.co.uk gives your gym some free advertising, and a place for your users to tell others how great you are (or aren't). Your rating is very important as it is shown in the search results - the better your rating the more likely you are to attract a potential customers attention. The best way to boost your rating is to tell your members about gymdar.co.uk and get them to write you an honest review !
